Seeing Hugh Laurie

"I've been shushed by Stephen Merrit and got the thumbs up from Hugh Laurie. Hoorah!"

So said my sister as we were mulling over last night's killer concert at Ram's Head in Annapolis. Hugh Laurie and the Copper Bottom Band. (We've been to some great concerts together -- Squirrel Nut Zippers, Magnetic Fields, and most recently this.) Ram's Head is a small venue, so any seat would have been grand, but she managed to get us seats right on the edge of the stage. And it was awesome.

Hugh Laurie is the first to admit he is the least capable of those gathered round him on stage. But his unabashed love of the music, and zeal for sharing, combined with his deference to and appreciation for his fellow musicians, make him the perfect emissary for a great night of New Orleans Blues. He was thrilled whenever he'd mention a seemingly obscure blues-man, and we'd cheer, knowing full well what was coming next.

Here are a few live performances recorded and dug up on youtube. His album is great fun -- but like all blues, it ought to be heard live. A recording can never capture the same energy. If you get a chance to see him, do!
