I'm not going to say she was silly. But one of us was silly. And it wasn't me.

--Squire Hamley, as played by Michael Gabon, in the BBC adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's Wives and Daughters (I don't know if it is in the book because I broke my rule and watched the movie without reading the book. Oh, man, it is so good.)

  1. Take it from me, reading Elizabeth Gaskell isn't really worth it. The miniseries they have made of her books are much better! :-)

  2. everyone says the books aren't as good as the movies, but I have just LOVED every one of her books that I've read...

  3. Just got the movie for free from the library and LOVED it. The Squire was my favorite. Had to come back and tell you!
