A Voice in the Wilderness

I can't resist posting something today, becuase it is one of the best solemnities of the year: The Feast of the Birth of St. John the Baptist!

St. John, of course, is our bridge between the Old Testament and the Old Testament--the prophet of He who is to come, and the (excepting the Holy Innocents) first to die as witness to Christ. Specially called by God, St. John cries out in the wilderness, witnessing to the Lord. But his story is an example for us all: we are all called to witness to Christ's grace. We diminish so that His presence may grow in our hearts and in our world.

The readings and the Gospel passage for today as incredibly beautiful, but I'll just leave you with this passage from Psalm 139:

Truly you have formed my innmost being;
You knit me in my mother's womb.
I give you thanks that I am fearfully, wonderfully made;
Wonderful are your works!
